Weird Honest Rebel Facts: my odd food of choice while pregnant with our youngest, Alex... yup you guessed it Peas. Not just fresh peas, but a frozen bag of peas, poured by the bowlful and eaten like ice cream with a spoon. Interesting that my little guy adores eating them as well.
3 Years into our marriage my husband says to me one night at dinner "you really like peas eh?" To which I raised an eyebrow and say "yessssss....whyyyy?????" He replies that he really doesn't care for them. 3 YEARS it took him to tell me. Now there's a good man!
The one thing I've learned about peas is that you need to have perseverance. It can feel like forever to shell them. It is of course well worth the effort, however it has taught myself and the boys how labour intensive it can be to enjoy them. How much work our great grandparents had to work for their food. We will never take a bag of frozen peas for granted ever again!
I shell them by inserting my thumbnail into the inside curve of the pea pod and scooping it out with my thumb in one fell swoop. The pods go into the compost pile and the peas sometimes even make it into a meal rather than my mouth as I go along!
So plant some peas. You won't be disappointed.
