Moth balls contain naphthalene which is harmful if the fumes are breathed in and irritating to the skin if clothing comes in direct contact. The odor is unpleasant to say the least. I remember an antique trunk we tried to air out for weeks and it still wouldn't release the toxic smell. There is a better solution! For a more environmental friendly insect deterrent, use dried lavender. Lavender is non-irritating and has a beautiful smell. You'll find that your clothing is just as protected and ready to wear when you remove it from storage.
The sachet I use is one that my twin sister had bought years ago with a pretty lavender design on the front. The scent of the lavender stays a good long while. Just compost the old flowers and refill annually. Freshly dried lavender should be used at the change of the seasons or at the very least once a year.
So make your own. It's super easy and way better for the environment and your personal health.
